watches are precise and easy to read, yet misleading. At first glance,
11:58 seems no closer to noon than 11:23. Digits are digits. Analog
watches, on the other hand, more closely match experience to time,
but are hard to read. In this design, a digital display shows both
a digital hour and a phrase that roughly matches to analog time- i.e.
"A little past 4", or "Nearly 5".

information is presented on the display by sequentially flashing words
on the display. Surprisingly, our research showed the sequential flashing
of text is easier to understand than scrolling- and can be flashed
at relatively high speed. The patent also provides for a user navigation
system as well. An excellent choice for pagers, cellphones or PDAs.

LCDs are typically illuminated with a plastic light guide sheet. Light
from a fluorescent tube fills the sheet, and small white dots are
screen on the sheet surface to divert light to the LCD. In this patent,
the sheet is covered with tiny clear bumps, which act like prisms
to divert the light. This technique is inexpensive and can control
the light uniformity and emission direction.

- In
most trackballs and computer mice, the ball mechanically rotates two
sensors by frictionally spinning a pair of orthogonal axles connected
to the sensors. Of course, this mechanical system is prone to dirt
clogging the axles and skips and jumps of the cursor from gunk on
the ball. A better mouse still employs a rotating ball, but senses
the ball's position capacitively. That is, under the surface of the
ball are buried an array of metal plates, and a capacitive sensor
takes a "snap shot" of the array every few milliseconds. By comparing
two capacitive snap shots, the balls rotational speed and direction
can be deduced. The same trick can be employed with an array of dots
on the ball, with a digital camera taking a snap shot of the array.
This principle underlies the Logitech "Marble" series of trackballs.
